Placing a throwline accurately into a tall or densely branched tree can take time—especially when the target limb is high, the available opening is narrow or the surrounding canopy restricts a traditional hand throw.

The Notch BIG SHOT® gives arborists a simple and controlled way to launch a throw weight and line into the canopy. Once positioned, the throwline can be used to install a friction saver or pull a climbing line into place.

What Is the Notch BIG SHOT®?

The Notch BIG SHOT® is an arborist throwline launcher designed to reach high or difficult-to-access anchor points.

Its elastic tubing and projectile pouch are mounted to a long fibreglass pole assembly. The operator loads a suitable arborist throw weight, aims at the selected target and draws the pouch back to generate the required launching force.

The further the pouch is drawn back, the greater the launch force. This gives the operator control when working with targets at different heights and helps reduce the likelihood of overshooting lower branches.

Why Use a Throwline Launcher?

Hand throwing remains useful for lower or open targets, but it can become difficult when working with:

• Tall trees
• High anchor points
• Narrow canopy openings
• Dense or complex branching
• Vertical targets with a restricted approach
• Sites where repeated hand throws would be inefficient

The BIG SHOT® helps launch a throw weight to a vertical height of more than 30 metres. Its controlled trajectory can also improve consistency when the target is difficult to reach by hand.

What Comes in the Notch BIG SHOT® Set?

The standard Notch BIG SHOT® Set includes:

• One BIG SHOT® head
• Projectile pouch and elastic tubing
• One 4 ft fibreglass base pole
• One 4 ft fibreglass extension pole

When assembled, the two pole sections create a launcher approximately 8 ft, or 2.44 metres, long.

The quick-connect pole design allows the launcher to be assembled and separated for transport or storage.

Throw weights, throwline, trigger and carry case are not included with the standard set and may need to be purchased separately.

Controlled Power for Different Targets

One of the BIG SHOT® system’s main advantages is its variable launching force.

For a lower target, the pouch does not need to be drawn back as far. Higher targets require a greater draw. This allows the operator to adjust the launch to suit the height and position of the selected limb rather than using the same amount of force for every shot.

As with any line-setting tool, developing consistent technique takes practice. New users should begin with controlled shots in a clear area before attempting high or restricted canopy targets.

Using the BIG SHOT® Safely

A throw weight launched under elastic tension can cause serious injury or property damage if the equipment is used incorrectly. The BIG SHOT® should only be used for arborist line-setting applications and with a purpose-designed arborist throw weight.

Before each use:

• Inspect the head, pouch and elastic tubing for damage or deterioration
• Check that both fibreglass poles are clean, undamaged and securely connected
• Confirm that the BIG SHOT® head is correctly fitted
• Inspect the throw weight and throwline
• Check the intended flight path and landing area
• Keep other people clear of the work zone
• Look for powerlines, vehicles, buildings and other hazards
• Wear appropriate PPE, including a helmet and eye protection

During use, keep the pouch and elastic tubing facing away from the operator. Position the base pole firmly on the ground and never aim the launcher towards another person.

The BIG SHOT® head must only be used with suitable, inspected 1.25-inch-diameter fibreglass extension poles. Do not attach it to wooden poles or use improvised projectiles.

The BIG SHOT® is particularly useful for working arborists and tree-care professionals who regularly need to install lines in tall or complex trees.
